A cutting-edge fitness center with low fees

POOL

T

here’s an urban fitness center that may put your snotty, high-priced private gym to shame, and for a fraction of the fee. The Kroc Center is run by the Salvation Army, but it’s as swanky as the big boys, brand new and with 90,000 square feet of state of the art fitness equipment, basketball and volleyball courts, a three-story rock-climbing wall, a ropes course, a performing-arts center, a computer lab, a teen center, dance and arts classes, a café, and Boston’s biggest indoor, year-round aquatic center with a heated indoor water park, lazy river, and water slide. There are adult sports leagues, fitness classes, school-vacation programs. And the membership fees? They start at a staggering two bucks a month for kids, and don’t rise much from there. Shelbourne

Yeah, we know, it’s ironic that a fitness center in the inner city was endowed by the late Joan Kroc, third widow of and heir to the guy that founded McDonald’s, but she gave $1.6 billion to open Salvation Army centers nationwide, and undertook all kinds of other philanthropy, so we won’t McMention it.
