he husband-and-wife team that has been providing the island’s hoi polloi with custom cakes since opening Nantucket Cake Company in 1984 owns a retail bakery now, too—Petticoat Row Bakery—where even commoners can enjoy sweet treats, and has expanded its menu to include such things as cupcakes, Danish, macaroons, and petit fours, all made in the kitchen right upstairs. (You can find this place just by the smell of fresh-baked cakes.) Check out the hand-rolled bagels, which pair nicely with a cup of the organic coffee. Clements
Nantucket’s long seafaring history meant women were left at home to run the place for years at a time. Several opened shops on what became known as “Petticoat Row,” on Centre Street between Main and Broad streets, from which several modern-day Nantucket businesses take their names.
