Two champion martial artists' Persian café

hen you step into Kookoo Café, you might think you’ve walked into its owners’ living room. The family photos scattered around the place add to the illusion. So does the dim lighting, wooden floors and furniture, and distinctly Persian decor. Kookoo has the feel of an old-world hookah bar to match its Persian coffee-shop menu. Owners Ali Mohajerani and Elie Dunford, veterans of the U.S. National Karate Team and former owners of Bean & Leaf Café, opened Kookoo down the street from Inner Space, their mind-body studio, which offers yoga, pilates, and karate classes. Another secret: the Kookoo Sabzee, the fluffy frittata-like dish of eggs and chopped greens from which the café takes its name—but which you won’t find on the menu. Goldberg
