A little piece of baseball scandal right in Kenmore Square

ay it isn’t so, Joe! It was in a room at the Hotel Buckminster that a Boston bookmaker named Joe “Sport” Sullivan made a deal with Chicago White Sox first baseman Chick Gandil to throw the 1919 World Series in what would become known as the Black Sox scandal. “I think we can put it in the bag,” Gandil said. He ended up one of the eight Chicago players banned forever from baseball, including the beloved “Shoeless” Joe Jackson.

A jazz club called Storyville, run by jazz promoter and Newport Jazz Festival founder George Wein, moved to the Hotel Buckminster from its original home in the Copley Square Hotel in the 1950s. Performers included Billie Holiday, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, Sarah Vaughan, and Erroll Garner.
