A cheap hotel right at the marathon finish line

A

lmost exactly beside the epic landmark that is the finish line of the Boston Marathon, the Charlesmark Hotel is in the heart of the Back Bay, but much, much cheaper than the neighboring hotels. A six-story onetime single-family mansion built in 1886, it was renovated into a “budget boutique” hotel by a pair of young entrepreneurs (the “Charles” and “Mark” of the name, who also own the Harborside Inn), one of whom is almost always on site. It décor is stylish and modern, including in a popular street-level bar frequented by friendly regulars. There’s also a small patio fronting Boylston Street. The 40 rooms are small, beginning at 150 square feet, but surprisingly comfortable and chic, with imported European tile and fixtures, high-thread-count linens, down pillows, DVD players (and a movie library), surround sound, and custom furniture made of bright, light wood. There’s a free basic continental breakfast, free bottled water, and plenty of bar and restaurant options steps away in every price range. Ask for rooms on a high floor on the Boylston Street side.

Boylston Street was originally known as Frog Lane and than Common Street before being renamed for philanthropist Ward Nicholas Boylston.
