Champion Celtic

An Irish pub so real it’s a hangout for the rugby set

W

hat really makes the Green Briar Pub special is that, unlike many pubs that are Gaelic in name and appearance only, it lives up to its Celtic claim. This is a hangout of the Boston Irish Wolfhounds, the city’s hometown (and genuinely Irish) amateur rugby club. Mondays feature Irish music sessions open to anyone who wants to play along; during the summer, Irish bands
also play Sunday night shows in the back room. The main bar is surrounded by tables and chairs, with plasma TVs. The kitchen serves the usual assortment of bar food, with a beer and liquor selection much like any other pub catering to a clientele a few years removed from college. Enos

The Boston Celtics were formed in 1946 by Water Brown, who owned the Boston Garden and needed to fill seats when the Bruins weren’t playing. Rejecting proposals including the Whirlwinds, the Unicorns, and the Olympics, he picked the name the Celtics to attract Irish fans, exclaiming, “Boston is full of Irishmen!”
