eave it to an island with a legacy of fishermen and whalers to boast a retro store for real men, right down to the buck knives in the display cases. Sundog is the quintessential men’s store—not flashy or fake, and subtle in its small, dark, masculine space on a side street, complete with classic jazz playing on a phonograph and photographs of Bogart and Bacall smoking cigarettes—but being retro doesn’t make it old fashioned. The two-story shop, still run by two generations of the family that founded it in 1970, sells only clothing made of natural fibers, from Madras sweaters to rugby shirts, Tommy Bahama to oil-skinned British hunting jackets, shoes, and bowties.

A tree brought from China by Captain Thomas Milton when it was still a seedling is now the oldest pagoda tree in North America. It’s on South Water Street in Edgartown. Milton also built the house the tree now shades.
