B
uilt in 1929 to house America’s first YWCA (which still has offices in, and owns, it), Hotel 140 has only 55 rooms, few enough that guests receive surprisingly personal service for about a third of what other hotels in this neighborhood charge, from a staff that, while not exactly fawning, is knowledgeable and efficient. The location is superlative, attracting hip, easy-to-please, enthusiastic 20- and 30-something American and European bargain hunters. The hotel likes to call itself “discount boutique,” which seems to be a euphemism for “small rooms.” But Hotel 140 works to keep itself updated, and the original fixtures of this 80-year-old building add character, including (non-working) fireplaces. For an even better deal, there are a few suites that sleep up to eight, with full kitchens and two bathrooms. Another secret: The hotel offers discounts on its already low rates for guests who go to shows at the Lyric Stage, which shares the building (25 percent off), or Red Sox games at Fenway Park (10 percent off).
Although he hated the city because of its exclusive literary establishment that was often critical of his work, Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston. Want to know where? Click here or you will learn it nevermore.
