emember, from your elementary-school history books, the “shot heard ’round the world? Well, Isaac Green was the poor guy at the wrong end of it. The monument on the Acton town green is dedicated to Green, the little-known 30-year-old father of four who volunteered to lead the advance and was the first American killed at the battle at the North Bridge in Concord – the “shot heard ‘round the world” – which launched the Revolutionary War. His heroism, and that of his comrades, is reenacted every year by the Acton Minutemen (above). “I haven’t a man who is afraid to go,” Captain Davis is purported to have said.
Acton has its own town holiday: Crown Resistance Day on October 3, commemorating the date in 1774 when residents sent a list of grievances to King George III.
