Batter Up!

Seven great waffle secrets

counterculture_0

L

ike all good things, waffles were introduced to America right here, when the Pilgrims brought them from their brief stopoff in the Netherlands. (Who said those guys weren’t fun?) It took another 300 years for Belgian waffles, which are higher and deeper than conventional waffles because they use yeast batter instead of pancake batter, to debut in the United States at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Whatever the type, these days waffles aren’t just for breakfast any more. They’re an entree, served with fried chicken, or a dessert, part of an ice-cream sundae or stuffed with European Mars bars.
