Barrels of Fun

The unlikely place where you can make your own wine

ake your own wine? In Dorchester? Yup. The nine-month process at the Boston Winery, a converted Civil War-era red-brick nail factory, begins when you learn to crush and de-stem grapes in the fall, prepare and store them in the winter, then filter, bottle, and cork your wine by summer—all under the tutelage of master winemakers from California and Europe and Ralph Bruno, the winery’s Italian-born founder. (He also runs the Venezia restaurant next door.) It’s the only place in New England where you can do this. Don’t want to go to the trouble? You can just pick up a few bottles at the gift shop.
