N
o, Chillingsworth is not a secret. It’s the best restaurant on Cape Cod, and one of the best in America. But do you want to know a secret about the best restaurant on Cape Cod? It has a casual bistro with a separate kitchen and menu for mere mortals who didn’t plan six weeks ahead to make a dinner reservation—or hit it rich in Vegas to pay for one. With its blond wood and terracotta tiles under skylights, the less-well-known bistro serves a menu that, like the setting, is much lighter than the one upstairs, with Mediterranean and contemporary American preparations of seafood and other dishes. Sunday brunch is served here, too, and while it’s cheaper than Chillingsworth père, this ain’t no Hearth ‘n Kettle fare. The scrambled eggs are made with truffle oil.
Chillingsworth is in a 300-year-old house that was originally the estate of Chillingsworth Foster, a representative to the pre-Revolutionary “general court,” who married three times, had 10 children, and died at 84.
