Art Attack

A museum devoted to art so bad it’s good

T

he sound of toilets flushing in the adjacent movie theater restroom is an appropriate accompaniment for a visit to the Museum of Bad Art, which specializes in “art too bad to be ignored.” These works are so artless that only one of every 10 nominees is bad enough to be accepted. Highlights include a painting of a Hindu goddess at the beach with a radio and umbrella, a pointillist study of a fat man in a towel, and the classic composition Sunday on the Pot with George, which is in the basement of the Somerville Theatre branch of the collection (free with the purchase of a movie ticket). And if the museum is not enough to draw you to this theater, it also serves beer and is convenient to great restaurants and bars. The other, original MOBA branch (motto: “Bringing the worst of art to the widest of audiences”) is in the basement of the Dedham Community Theatre (always free). The Museum of Bad Art has its own coffee-table guide, The Museum of Bad Art: Masterworks, a catalog of 70 “exquisitely bad pieces of master artwork from the permanent collection.” Check it out here.
