O
nly the hippest of Davis Square hipsters know about the blast from the past that is Sacco’s Bowl Haven, whose historic 15 alleys opened in 1939 and whose prices, like its décor, don’t seem to have changed since then. A onetime car-repair shop opened by the man who helped invent the uniquely New England tradition of candlepin bowling, Sacco’s is a simple, retro place with old green and white booths and paper scoresheets. There are vending machines with cheap snacks, and moonlight bowling Fridays from 9 p.m. to midnight. Be aware that the retro thing extends to paying: Sacco’s only takes cash. Canal
Ralph Sacco, founder of Sacco’s Bowl Haven, teamed up with a partner to create one of the first automatic pin-setting machines. He’s in the International Candlepin Bowling Association Hall of Fame in Bradford. Seriously.
